About the Item

Chinese Coromandel lacquer eight-fold screen with carved and hand-painted scenes, on the feet with brass caps. The front side is adorned with gilt and depicts ladies within the walled courtyard garden of a pavilion, the entrance guarded by a pair of Fo-dogs. The portal is inscribed with hieroglyphs in Chinese: 怡红院 (Yíhóngyuàn)*. Composition is framed with a phoenix pattern and a wide outer border of archaistic bronzes, vases with flowers, and other artifacts. The reverse side depicts a landscape with a lotus pond, where a pair of mandarin ducks perched on rocks beneath a wutong tree. Good condition, natural aging and wear on lacquer. Dimensions: H 213 cm x L 486 cm x D 18 cm (folded) D 2 cm (one plate) *The term 怡红院 (Yíhóngyuàn), originally meaning "Chamber of Red Delight" or "Happy Red Court," is a fictional place in the Chinese classic novel "Dream of the Red Chamber" by Cao Xueqin. It was the residence of the protagonist Jia Baoyu in the novel, built as part of the grand garden, Daguanyuan, for the visit of Jia Yuan-chun, a royal concubine. The name was bestowed upon the residence by Jia Yuan-chun herself. However, in many modern Chinese culture, 怡红院 has been misrepresented as a maiden house, leading to a widespread misconception. This shift in meaning is largely due to the playful and romantic nature of Jia Baoyu, who was known for his affection towards various female characters, coupled with the resemblance of his residence's feminine decor to that of a boudoir.
