Japanese Rare Lacquered Wood Sensory Game, 19th Century



An exceptional and rare antique Japanese lacquered wooden sensory game dating from the 19th century. This very finely made set comprises of a table shaped box decorated in gold with three leaf clover like designs with a gold lacquered shelf below and containing 10 small lift out open boxes each containing 12 wooden rectangular gaming counters (116 in total) finely gilded to one side with insects, animals, birds, leaves and flower symbols and with Japanese calligraphy to the opposite side. The boxes are all lacquered and gilded. Two of the boxes hold 10 counters with a small section of wood to level them with the other boxes. The set game is not marked. Offered in good condition without damage and with wear commensurate with age and use.
