About the Item
A Monumental Chinese Hand-Carved Four Color Cinnabar Lacquer "8" Peach-Form Covered Box on Stand, dating to the late Qing dynasty, circa late 1800's/Early 1900. This piece is constructed in multiple parts, including a lobed upper cover, interior tray with seven shaped compartments each holding a peach form covered box, and a matching carved cinnabar lacquer stand. The outer surface is adorned with carved cinnabar lacquer, enriched with areas of Red, green, yellow, and black lacquer. The entire object is crafted using the traditional Chinese technique of tìxī (剔犀), or incised carved lacquer, which involves applying successive layers of pigmented lacquer—sometimes more than one hundred—and then carving through them to create dimensional decoration. The box sits on a carved stand of matching lacquer with shaped legs and a deeply recessed base.
The overall structure of the box is formed as a giant peach, a shape closely associated in Chinese culture with longevity and immortality. The top of the lid is crowned by two large carved peaches connected by a naturalistic tree branch with bifurcated ends, rising in high relief from the surface. The lid is further decorated with a central medallion of the shuangxi character (囍), or “double happiness,” surrounded by fruiting peach branches. The body of the box is divided into shaped panels bordered by raised lacquer ridges, each filled with motifs of blossoming flowers, bats in flight, and auspicious emblems. Yellow and green lattice diaper patterns fill the negative spaces between the figural and floral decoration. Inside the tray sits seven peach-form mini boxes, each with its own lid. The lids are carved with alternating scenes of pavilions in landscape and floral sprays set against diaper grounds. Each of the mini boxes fits into the tray, which is shaped in harmony with the peach outline of the outer vessel.
The number eight holds deep significance in Chinese numerology and is associated with wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. The inclusion of eight total boxes reinforces this symbolism. In addition to the peaches, several traditional auspicious motifs appear throughout the design. Red bats (蝠) are a homophone for “blessings” or “happiness” (福), and their presence in flight across the surface symbolizes the arrival of good fortune. The central “double happiness” character is often used in the context of marriage and signifies joy and union. Peony blossoms, which appear in high relief on the legs and stand, are traditionally seen as symbols of wealth and honor. Lingzhi fungus motifs can also be observed among the tree branches, referencing health and immortality. The legs of the stand curve outward in ruyi-form terminals, another traditional motif associated with auspicious wishes.
This object is an outstanding example of carved lacquer artistry at an advanced technical level, combining multiple pigments and carving depths to produce a highly complex, multi-layered surface. The application of alternating color grounds beneath the cinnabar lacquer—green for floral panels and yellow for diaper patterns—demonstrates a rare and demanding variation of the carved lacquer technique. The precision required to produce even, concentric layering and to incise both shallow and deeply modeled motifs without compromising the lacquer integrity indicates a high level of control in the workshop that produced it. The stand, carved en suite, features a continuous floral ground and pierced supports, contributing structural support as well as decorative continuity. The thickness and evenness of the lacquer layers suggest it was made in a major lacquer center, possibly Beijing or Canton, where large-scale cinnabar carving was supported by imperial or elite patronage during the late Qing period.
Monumental lacquer boxes of this scale and complexity are rarely encountered, especially those retaining their original stands and interior trays with all matching peach-form compartments intact. The integration of multiple symbolic forms—peach, bat, double happiness, and peony—demonstrates the object's alignment with themes of longevity, joy, and abundance. This configuration and form suggest it may have been produced as a wedding or birthday gift for an elite or court-affiliated recipient. The use of carved lacquer in multicolored palettes, combined with the technical challenge of rendering detailed high-relief botanical and figural designs across a curved surface, places this object among the rarer and more ambitious examples of Qing dynasty lacquerware.
