About the Item

Oval lobed bowl in “paper maché”, it is hand decorated in with gilded chinoiserie; very particular is the central figure that holds a bamboo stick in its hand from which fireworks come out (pyrotechnics were in use in China as early as the year 1000); the technique of "paper maché" (a mixture of paper and natural glues) has been known in China since 200 BC. (Han dynasty), then spreading throughout the East; helmets, shields, ceremonial masks, boxes, and other decorative objects were built in "paper maché"; in Europe, it appeared circa 1725 and soon this technique spread in the various European countries for the production of valuable artistic and ornamental works, in fact, in no other material have so many decorative techniques been seen and seen, as in this one, where the most refined lacquers, coatings, gildings, and paintings have their greatest expression. The reliability of "paper maché" creations is superior to what we can imagine, objects made 300/400 years ago in excellent condition have arrived at us! The "paper maché" had its greatest use from the 16th-20th century, particularly in France and Russia. Our bowl has a very special history, which we can deduce from the label placed on the bottom; we read the name "Derungs"; the Derungs house, founded in the 17th century, was particularly important as early as the 1800s for the production of the exclusive "pink biscuits of Reims" to be drenched in champagne; Charles X, when he came to Reims to be crowned King of France, tasted one of their biscuits, and must have loved them so much, because he gave Derungs, in 1825, the "patent of the King's biscuit producer"! The Fossier Company succeeded the Derungs in 1845; we can, therefore, assume that the Derungs Company used particular objects to make its famous biscuits, our bowl was one of those objects, certainly between 1825 and 1845 in France!
