About

A lovely bronze vessel of archaistic "hu" form. The wide, rounded body and slightly flared neck rising from a recessed foot. The body simply decorated with three simple raised bands. A pair of loose ring handles suspended from taotie masks flank either side. The bronze presents with a complex patina - a combination of an applied lacquer patina, as well as an oxidized burial patina. The bronze was originally lacquered a rich brown, with yellow and vermillion highlights. An oxidized burial patina has overtaken much of the surface, giving it a wonderful textural component. A malachite patina has covered the interior of the vessel and the interior of the foot, where the bronze was not lacquered. A clan mark has been cast in relief to the base. The term "hu" is one used for any number of ritual wine vessels. This particular round body form was canonized during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC to 9 CE). This example dates from The Song Dynasty (960 to 1278 CE), nearly one thousand years later, and reflects the literati taste for the archaistic. The comparatively small size indicates this would be a decorative vase for the scholar's studio, rather than a vessel for ritual use.
