About the Item

A Fine Japanese Cloisonné Enamel Vase with Swallows and Wisteria, Signed Goto Meiji Period (c. 1890–1910) Worked in silver wire , of ovoid form with gently flaring foot and rim, set on a gilt metal base. The body is finely decorated with a delicate naturalistic scene of swallows fluttering among cascading clusters of wisteria and entwined flowering vines, rendered in subtle polychrome enamels on a soft cream ground. The reverse is adorned with seasonal irises and further trailing vines, creating a continuous and lyrical composition that evokes the fleeting beauty of spring. The enamel work is smooth and vitreous, indicating a high level of technical refinement from the golden age of Japanese cloisonné production. The base is impressed with a three-character mark reading 後藤製 (Gotō sei – “Made by Gotō”), referencing a known cloisonné artist or workshop active during the late Meiji period. A fine example of Japanese cloisonné art, this piece demonstrates both aesthetic charm and exceptional craftsmanship. Size: H 16 cm In excellent condition. No damage or restoration observed.
