Japanese Meiji Period Patinated Bronze Figure of Shishi Foo Dog on a Ball
About the Item
A 19th Century Japanese Meiji Period Patinated Bronze Figure of Shishi Foo Dog Standing on a Ball, Signed on the Underside. A finely cast 19th-century Japanese patinated bronze shishi (foo dog) depicted standing atop an openwork ball. The muscular body is rendered with a dynamic posture, its powerful limbs firmly planted, and its head turned slightly to the side with a fierce expression. The face is detailed with deeply cast features, including large bulging eyes, an open mouth revealing sharp teeth, and a prominent nose. The thick, curling mane extends down its back, meeting a highly stylized, flame-like tail.
The surface of the bronze is adorned with intricate relief details, including swirling cloud motifs and raised bosses, adding to the sculptural depth. The foo dog wears a collar with a hanging bell, indicative of its protective symbolism. The openwork ball beneath its paw is skillfully pierced with interlocking floral and geometric patterns, demonstrating fine craftsmanship. The underside bears a signature.
The shishi, a guardian figure in Japanese and Chinese culture, symbolizes protection and prosperity, often placed at temple entrances or commissioned for wealthy households. The high level of detail and the deep, rich patina of the bronze reflect the period’s advanced casting techniques and artistic refinement.
