Pr. 19th C. Meiji Japanese Champleve Inset Bronze Vases Signed 21.25"

About the Item

Japanese, 19th century. This exquisite pair of 19th-century Japanese Champlevé or cloisonne style inset bronze vases represents a masterful blend of artistry and craftsmanship. Each vase stands at an impressive 21.25 inches tall and is adorned with intricate Champlevé enamel work, showcased birds and bat form motifs in vibrant colors and detailing. The bronze vases are further enhanced by finely cast geometric designs, reflecting traditional Japanese motifs. Both vases are signed to the underside. Based on the amount of pitting to the enameling, these vases could be earlier. Historical Significance: Champlevé is an enameling technique in which cells are carved, etched, or cast into the surface of a metal object and then filled with vitreous enamel. This technique, which became highly developed in Japan during the Meiji period, allowed for the creation of detailed and colorful designs that were both durable and aesthetically stunning. These vases are exemplary of the high-quality decorative arts produced in Japan during the 19th century, a period marked by significant artistic innovation and cultural exchange. Measurements: 8" w, 21.25" h.
