Japanese Charming Antique "Kewpie" Doll Hand Painted Tall Hard to Find Size

From Our Recent Japanese Acquisitions Travels Here's a rare Japanese International favourite. We couldn't resist this cherished fun loving large scale 12 inch tall bisque "Kewpie" doll replete with its original red heart painted belly and blue ribbon hand painted detail, recently accessed from an old Southern Japanese private collection. Measuring a significant 12 inches tall and 9 inches wide, our handcrafted doll has a renown history. Designed by cartoonist Rose O'Neill, these earlier bisque versions of Kewpie dolls, particularly in this scarce largest size, are widely sought-after by antique and doll collectors. Multiple signatures on base. Dimensions: 12 inches tall and a bulbous 9 inches wide and 11 inches deep Provenance: comes from an old Southern Japanese collection. Hand-crafted. Hand-painted. About Kewpie Dolls: Kewpie is a brand of dolls and figurines that were conceived as comic strip characters by cartoonist Rose O'Neill. The illustrated cartoons, appearing as baby cupid characters, began to gain popularity after the publication of O'Neill's comic strips in 1909. The characters were first produced as bisque dolls in Waltershausen, Germany, beginning in 1912, and became extremely popular in the early 20th century. The Kewpie dolls were initially made out of bisque exclusively, but composition versions were later introduced in the 1920s, and celluloid versions were manufactured in the following decades. These earlier "bisque" and composition versions of Kewpie dolls are widely sought-after by antique and doll collectors. Their popularity never ceases to amaze us. They are enjoyed internationally and serve as wonderful and unique momentoes of old Japan. Lifetime Guarantee of Authenticity. All our Asian works of art are accompanied by our lifetime guarantee of authenticity.
