About the Item
Exceptional Japanese contemporary two panel "byobu" or folding screen featuring genryoku style handcrafted silk raised kimono Japanese decorative art in crimson red, black and gold on beautiful aged off white background. With indigo and crimson kanoko tie-dye in the center, this piece is embroidered with chrysanthemum flowers and umbrellas wrought in gold and colored threads, gold leaf has been repreented to create a flowing hanagasa (flower hat) design. The indigo hanagasa hats are decorated with kanoko or stripes of kanoko, which compliment each other, while a sufficient margin has been left around the design.
Tagasode is the way a genryoku kosode kimono is hung gracefully over a kimono rack. The kosode is considered the origin of modern kimono. According to the designer of this series, tagasode originated from the desire of ladies of the court to preserve their exquisite kimonos, and thus kimono designs showcasing the Four Seasons in Japan, its history and its customs have been passed down all the way to the present generation. This byobu series conveys the beauty and sensibility that the history of Japan reflects and at the same time enhances contemporary living spaces.
