Japanese Chinese Asian Four-Panel Byobu Folding Screen Landscape with Children

About the Item

A gorgeous hand-painted four-panel Japanese-style Byobu folding screen depicting a landscape scene with a mother who is apparently on her way to a feast or ceremony carrying a tray of flowers and perhaps tea while her accompanying children seem to be merrily carrying some sort of over-sized large fruit - perhaps a peach. This particular screen is Chinese (there is a sticker on the back corner indicating this) so we are surmising the motif may be based on Chinese folklore or tale. The hand-painted detail and gold leaf coloring make this an attractive and special work. Original decorative period brass hardware adds another wonderful touch. This lovely screen is sure to stand out in almost any setting whether used as a room divider or hung on the wall as a work of art. A beautiful and curiously engaging work. Approximate dimensions when fully extended: 36" high, 60" wide, .75" deep. Approximate folded dimensions: 36" high, 15" wide, 5" deep.

This multi-coloured painting is set on a shiny gold-leaf background, and the chrysanthemum flowers are painted by using shell paste (gofun) in low relief. Several clutches with a great variety of chrysanthemum flowers are in full bloom and they each show their unique form and colour. Varying from white, red, yellow and pink. The flowers bloom all around and on different kinds of bamboo fences and trellises. In Japan chrysanthemums are believed to represent happiness, love, longevity and joy. The panels are surrounded by two silk borders, a thin black one, and a wide brown one. The screen is protected by a black and red negoro’nuri...
