Japanese Edo Four Panel Screen Kano School Filial Piety
About the Item
Early 19th century late Edo period Japanese four-panel screen depicting examples from the 24 paragons of filial piety. Painted in the Kano School style featuring figures in colorful, ornate robes and mythical elephant beasts. Ink and natural color pigments on mulberry paper with gold flecks and gold leaf cloud borders on top and bottom. The painting is set in a later ebonized wood frame with a silk brocade border. Extraordinary condition given age with vibrant colors and intricate details. Circa 1820 from a collector in San Francisco, CA.
