Japanese Showa Two Panel Screen Pair of Tethered Hawks

About the Item

Captivating Japanese Showa period two-panel folding byobu screen featuring a pair of hawks or birds or prey tethered to a wooden perch. The painting has ink and natural colored pigments over a dramatic gilt background. Beautifully painted with intricate details set in a rich, mahogany stained wood frame with a gold silk brocade border. Very good, near new condition with minor age appropriate wear. Painted in the Nihonga school style and signed by an artist Essen with a seal. Gumps label verso. Provenance: Purchased new from Gumps San Francisco for an estate in San Francisco, California.
