About the Item

Splendid screen with two full-length double leaves, linked by metal hinges, in wood painted on all surfaces. Each sheet received an independent painting. It reveals to us a magnificent antique landscape worthy of a 17th century theater set, these sets, which played such a big role in theatrical plays, and which contributed so strongly to the triumph of dramas, comedies and above all lyrical adaptations. If it is used today to separate a space in two, to protect from wind or light or to preserve an intimate corner from prying eyes, there was a time when it was used to block demons. Appeared in China during the reign of the Zhou dynasty (from the 11th century BC to the 3rd century BC), the latter was then composed of only a wooden panel which will become foldable during the Han dynasty . The screen had at that time a mystical Dimension and was used for its ability to block spirits then known to only move in straight lines. The Expansion of the folding screen and its use began with China's neighbors namely Korea and Japan. With the arrival of heating in houses in the 19th century, the latter saw its use decrease before returning to center stage during the 20th century for its design aspect and for its ability to redefine the spaces of our interiors with harmony and discretion.
