Large Square Chinese Carved Camphor Wood "Longevity" Screen Panel

About the Item

A large vintage Chinese camphor wood window screen panel, carved and pierced with longevity symbols, mid to late 20th century, China. The square framed carved camphor wood panel features a large roundel carved with a central image of a pair of deer amongst pine against a "wan" patterned diaper ground. Surrounding the deer is a border of cranes flying amidst most pine. The roundel is completed by a leiwen meander border. The corners carved as large moths with beautiful wings, a scrolling acanthus design fills the rest of the space.  The panel is double framed, with the interior frame having shaped corners and beveled edges. The carved motifs are full of symbolism revolving around longevity and rebirth. Deer, cranes, and pine are all associated with Shoulao, the God of Longevity. Deer are said to be the only animal who are able to find lingzhi, the fungus of immortality. Both cranes and pine trees are included because of their observed long lifespans. In Chinese culture, the moth is a symbol of rebirth and transformation, starting life as a caterpillar, retreating into a cocoon, then emerging as a beautiful winged moth. The "wan" symbol in the background is a Chinese homophone for the number "10,000", usually referring to years or generations. The top with two brass hanging hooks with stylized "shou" (longevity) characters. The camphor wood polished, with a beautiful patina.
