Set of Four Chinese Lattice Door Panels, c. 1900

About the Item

A hallmark of Qing-dynasty domestic architecture, tall lattice panels such as these were used in provincial courtyard homes to allow light and air into a room whilst maintaining privacy. Quiet and refined, this set of four lattice door panels has an effortless simplicity ideal for minimalist, zen interiors. Each panel features a lattice window of straight, geometric fretwork, carefully assembled with mortise-and-tenon joinery and carved with finely beaded texture. The surrounding frames are comprised of multiple inset panels enclosed by rounded molding, with one panel decorated by the simple outline of a quatrefoil cartouche. Left unfinished to celebrate the natural beauty of the wood grain, the panels reveal their age with speckled imperfections and a soft, timeworn patina. Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art.
