An impressionist painting of a trees in snow on a wooden board in period carved gilded frame. It is signed on the bottom right hand corner S Kitayama and dated 1912. Further inscription in Kanji on the back of the frame. Frame measures 17 x 20 1/2 inches Painting measures 9 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches Frame is original to the painting and of the period. The painter is most likely Seitaro Kitayama (Japanese, 1888-1945), an important figure in late Meiji period credited with being the father of Japanese animation before Walt Disney started his company. The painting style is impressionism which was keenly followed by a new generation of Japanese artists who either traveled to Europe for training or received Western publications on artists and gallery shows at home. Kitayama, Seitaro was born on March 3, 1888 in Wakayama, and died on February 13, 1945. In 1911, Kitayama became an apprentice to Tojiro Oshita and, while studying painting, also helped out with editing the art magazine Mizue. He soon moved to Tokyo and established the Western Art Guild of Japan and published Contemporary Western Art. He later joined the Fusain Art Group as a manager where he would support young western-style artists such as Ryusei Kishida and Sohachi Kimura by providing art supplies, in addition to holding exhibitions and publishing catalogues. On the other hand, he entered the Nikkatsu Mukojima Studio in 1916, proposed the inclusion of illustrations in intertitles, and made this his work. Sotheby’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September. This sale was titled “Modern & Contemporary Indian Art”. The Lot consisted of a Group of 3 Watercolors by Babu Xavier, Paresh Maity and Ranjit Kurmi. (b.1960, b.1965, b.1970) Three Untitled Works. Signed and dated ‘Paresh Maity ’02 lower right, watercolor and ink on paper. …. 5.6 x 3.6 (14 x 9 cm)”. Exhibited: Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Modern Indian Art, Cornell University, Ithaca, April 8 – June 11 2006. The Provenance is given as: “Property of Private Maryland Collectors”. The 3 watercolors carried an Auction estimate of USD 3,000 to USD 4,000 and Sold for USD 4,000 (not including Buyers Premium). Allowing for inflation alone this would be over $7,000 in today’s value. We have this watercolor by Paresh Maity and (listed separately) the Babu Xavier watercolor, but not the Ranjit Kurmi watercolor. As an added bonus and proof of authenticity the painting still retains it’s original Sotheby’s Lot No. Label. A contemporary ink painting on paper by Chinese artist Li Jin (1958-) presented in a white shadowbox frame. Entitled in English "Morning Practice in California", this series of work was painted in 2017 when the artist resided in US. The Chinese title inscription is "Blossom Branch" with artist's name signed in both Chinese and English. The painting is considered "Expressionistic-abstract". Using only various shades of ink, the poetic work depicts a large lotus flower with the pistil in the center composed of clusters of mediating arhats, the beings who have gained nirvana through Buddhism practice (known as Luohans in Chinese). There is a strong association of lotus flower and purity in Buddhism. The wisdom one can possibly achieve may be considered omnipresent and morphogenetical quantum and be part of everything around us. The image size is 13.5" x 13.5". Fu Guoshun was born at Hebei in 1954. He was complimented as a Master of Chinese arts and crafts in 2012. It is the highest honor for an inside painting artist. There are only ten artists who earned this glory.
