Hiroshi Yoshida Signed Japanese Woodblock Print Plum Gateway With Rare Toku Seal

About the Item

A wonderful woodblock print titled "Plum Gateway" by Hiroshi Yoshida (吉田博, 1876 – 1950) who is widely considered to be one of Japan's finest 20th century artist and one of, if not the greatest working artist in the Shin-Hanga movement. The image features a woman with child on her back standing under a blossoming tree while waiting for another child to enter the gateway and join her. This work was originally published in 1935 though this is likely a later posthumous edition. The woodblock print is signed (impressed) and titled and displays his brushed sumi ink "Yoshida" signature and is sealed with his red "Hiroshi" seal within the image. The print exhibits the very rare and extremely scarce Toku seal in the top left margin. The Toku or "special" seal was a rare mark, used for high-quality prints given as gifts (set aside by Yoshida for special reasons or given by the publishing studio) or tokens of appreciation to a person of prominence, akin to Watanabe’s “gift” seal. This is the first print with the Toku seal that we have come across. Yoshida was the first in a long lineage of renowned family artist. His works can be found in numerous prominent collections and museums worldwide. Would be a great addition to any Japanese art and print collection. Frame dimensions: 16" high, 11" wide.
