About the Item

A scholar's object intended for the workshop—most likely used as an ink drip rather than a true teapot—recognizable by its small spout opening and tightly fitting lid. The piece is carved from polychrome soapstone typical of Shoushan, with a fine paste and a smooth polish, featuring brick-red, honey-yellow, and gray veins punctuated by light grains. The body imitates a trunk/antlers and is decorated in high relief: bats with outstretched wings on the sides, twigs, and lingzhi (ruyi) mushrooms running toward the handle, the line of which evokes a ruyi cloud. The lid features a piece of branch on which the lingzhi reappears, accompanied by a small scarab-like insect, a naturalistic detail appreciated in scholarly imagery. The iconography composes a truly auspicious program: the bat (fu, homophone of happiness/fortune), the lingzhi/ruyi (longevity and wish fulfillment), and the insect, messenger of the natural world, dear to scholars. The ensemble expresses wishes for happiness, longevity, and success, particularly popular at the end of the Qing dynasty. Beautiful antique condition, satin-polished. A decorative and workshop piece representative of Shoushan's productions for the scholar market at the end of the 19th century.
