A Very Fine Japanese Mixed Metal Bronze Censer on Stand, Taisho Period

About the Item

A very fine Taisho Period bronze censer of bellied oval form, richly decorated overall with hand enamelled and 'shibuichi' & 'shakudo' motifs, depicting geometric designs, pine trees, exotic beasts, priestly & scholarly figures, mounted at both ends with organic-inspired open handles with fruiting vines. Raised overall on four short supports, and resting atop its original and similarly decorated ‘Daiza’ (stand), both exhibiting an exceptionally fine reddish-brown patina overall. Dimensions, 5” high (5.75” high on stand) x 13” wide x 7.75” deep. Combined weight, 10.3 lbs. Note: Shibuichi is a technique using an alloy of silver & copper, whereas Shakudo is a technique using an alloy of gold & copper. These techniques are recorded as having been used prior to the 18th century to decorate Samurai swords, but with the advent of the Meiji Period (1868-1912), Japanese sword makers turned instead to using these techniques on various forms of metal-ware & decorative arts.
