A Framed Group of Five Chinese Dali Marble Scholar’s Stones, Late Qing Period

About the Item

Although sometimes referred to as ‘paintings’ or ‘dream stones’, these are sections of Dali marble, quarried from the Cangshan mountain range in Western China and carefully chosen & hewn to expose their unique russet, black & grey striations that evoke ethereal, misty mountainous landscapes & clouds. Each showing hand painted calligraphy in red. The Chinese refer to these striations as "moss entangled in melting snow". The reverse of the frame showing showing traditional joinery methods featuring a chamfered panel secured with individual 'keys' slotted & nailed in place.
