14 /15th Century Thai Figure. Sculpted Out of Sawankalok

About the Item

14 /15th century Thai Figure. Sculpted out of Sawankalok, a Highly respected type of Thai ceramics that flourished from the 13th through the 15th centuries. The vast majority of what was produced was things like vases, cookware, dishes, and bowls, etc. There were some small figures and some larger figures. Any that I have seen were much more formulaic than this one. What I mean by that is that they were all much more similar to each other and that they all had a kind of consistency to them that this one does not. This one has a depth and personality and character to the figure that (to my mind) is rarely found in ancient Asian sculpture. The head appears to have been made separately and attached later (and/or reattached). There are some other minor repairs that have been done over the years. A true one of a kind. Size is 8.75" H x 8" W .

Masterpiece 15th century Northern Thai bronze Buddha. This is the best of the best. Traces of gilding in the crevices of the hair, behind the ears, etcetera. The casting is crisp, the sculpting shows great finesse and depth, the patina is beautiful and complex and desirable, the proportions are classic, and the face as deep and serene and beautiful as any you will find on any Buddha. It is extremely large and is the largest high-end period bronze Buddha from Thailand I have ever had the pleasure of offering at 31 inches tall and in the range of 50 to 60 pounds (most of the clay core scooped out) (Outstanding provenance -from the personal collection of Ali A. Abssi (1934-2020) founder of the Ishtar gate...

  • 15th Century Japanese Bronze Baby Buddha, Large, Refined and Graceful-Special!

Baby Buddha- represents the Buddha right after his birth pointing toward Heaven and Earth so they can witness his first steps. Twenty years ago I had a near identical Japanese Baby Buddha. This one has a finer patina and may be more finely cast, but is extremely similar in almost every way. It was made in the same workshop, probably by the same hand. Fortunately, the other one had an inscription on it (this one does not, but is almost certainly the same age as the other one plus or minus 30 years). The woman I mentored at the time was able to read Japanese- she translated the year to late 15th century Japan...
