Antique Japanese Gilded Statue of a Shinto God, Momoyama Period

About the Item

A Japanese statue of a Shinto god from the Momoyama period. Hand carved from wood with a layer of gesso and hand painted flowing robes with delicately wrought, colorful designs including a lotus on the centre panel. The deity has been created with glass eyes and a calm expression their outstretched hands, palms facing inwards towards each other. The gesso has been darkened by years of incense smoke and is cracked and chipped in places which only adds to its overall presence. The statue comes with a separate dai, display stand which may not be the original, but is included with the item.
