Burmese Carved Wood Hermit Sumedha Buddhist Image, 19th Century

About

Burmese carved solid wood image of the Hermit Sumedha, known for lying down and stretching his body thin before the Dipankara Buddha, using his body as a bridge so that the Buddha would not have to walk in the mud and who in turn prophesied that Sumedha would become the next Buddha. Portrayed here in this stretched-out form with arms extended, grasping his long hair with a lotus spire ornament at the top; all covered in a red/brown lacquer with traces of gold leaf remaining, later mounted upright on a simple solid wood base. Conditions: Minor signs of wear, overall fine condition. 19th century. Measures: 58-1/2 in. high x 9-1/2 in. wide x 9 in. deep.
