Chinese Ming Dynasty Carved Wooden Bodhisattva

About

An attractive figure of a bodhisattva in meditation. He sits calmly in dhyanasana, slightly bent forward, hands in dhyana mudra. Thick robes wrapped loosely around his body, secured with a sash at his midsection. A five pointed crown (a later replacement), with a figure of Amitabha at the center, identifying this bodhisattva as Avalokiteshvara, known as Guanyin in Chinese. His beatific face with slightly cubby features, a serene smile on his lips. The back with a large unsealed cavity that would originally held consecration materials.
