Chinese Qing Dynasty Carved Hardwood Figure of Budai

About

A late Qing dynasty well carved hardwood carved figure of Budai. Carved from an extremely dense hardwood, with a rich, well figured grain that shimmers in the light. The top of his head displaying a warm and shiny patina form years of people rubbing it for luck and wisdom. His belly also showing signs of being well rubbed. The mirthful figure is known in the West by various other names - Fat Buddha, Happy Buddha, Laughing Buddha, Lucky Buddha, just to name a few. In China, he is called Budai, and is a much beloved figure. He is thought to be an incarnation of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future. Budai literally means "Cloth Bag", and he is indeed identified by the large cloth sack he carries, understood to be filled with wealth and treasures. His corpulent body and always laughing face indicate a life of ease and merriment.
