A FINE WOODEN NETSUKE OF TANUKI HARA NO TSUZUMI. Signed MINKO. Edo period

About the Item

Finely carved as tanuki no hara tsuzumi By Tanaka Minko (1735-1816), Tsu, late 18th century. The tanuki seated, its right foreleg raised, its other foreleg beating its distended stomach, the well-patinated wood slightly worn, the eyes inlaid in horn with dark pupils; signed underneath MINKO with a kao. Good, dark patina. Size: 3.5 x 2.5 cm Condition: In Very good condition commensurate with age. The tanuki possesses magical powers and can change forms, sometimes into Buddhist monks; they are jovial, but also dangerous, as they have been known to suffocate hunters with their enormous scrotums. The act of drumming on the belly, according to legend, was used by tanuki to beguile travelers and hunters to lead them astray. However, it has also been said that tanuki would get together just for fun, drumming on their bellies under the moonlight, perhaps even with some sake involved.
