Japanese Wooden Naruko Kokeshi Takumi KUMAGAYA 37cm

About the Item

This is a wooden doll which was made in Japan around 1950 in Showa era. This kind of dolls are called Kokeshi in Japanese. This kokeshi's style is Naruko from Miyagi prefecture. This kokeshi was made by a kokeshi artist Takumi KUMAGAYA. You can find his signature on the bottom of this doll. Kokeshi are wheel-carved wooden dolls. Characterized by a big head and a stable silhouette with a chrysanthemum pattern, Naruko kokeshi dolls boast a long history of 200 years and are designated as a national traditional craft product. The famous squeaking sound their heads make when turned is created with a unique method of inserting the head into the torso. Dimensions: 10 x 10 x H37 cm
