Large 20th Century Nepalese Gilt Bronze Figure of Yama and Yami
$21,500

About
A large and impressive Nepalese tantric gilt bronze figure of the dikpala Yama and his sister, Yami, early to mid-20th century (1920s-1940s).
Well cast and richly gilt, the buffalo headed dikpala (directional guardian) of the South stands upon the back of a bull trampling a prostate figure. Yama is portrayed here in his four armed form. His primary arms hold a flaming kapala (skull cup) and kartika (ritual flaying knife). His secondary arms holding a danda (skull staff) and lasso. He wears a tiger skin tied around his waist and a cobra draped around his neck. He is adorned with jewelry studded with coral and turquoise, a crown of skulls upon his head.
Yama's twin sister, Yami, also stands upon the bull's back, facing her brother. She holds a kapala (skull cup) in one hand, a kartika (ritual flaying knife) in the other. Her naked body is festooned with jewels studded with turquoise,. A diadem of skulls graces her head.
The statue is comprised of five separately cast parts: the lotus base, the prostrate figure, the bull, Yami and Yama. The base sealed.
Provenance: Private Texas collection before 1960.
