About the Item

Rare Near Life-Size Polychrome Bronze of a Native American Indian Chief after Carl Kauba, 20th century. This magnificent quality bronze, stands 52" tall and it depicts an American Indian chief with full a full uniform cast in solid bronze. Beautiful, bright and vibrant colors. Would stand out in any room and give life to anyone looking at it. 52" high x 29" wide x 18" deep Very good condition. Ready to place. Carl Kauba was born August 13, 1865 in Vienna, Austria. The son of a shoemaker, Kauba chose to follow his calling into the world of art. Collectors now rank him in a class with Remington and Russell as one of the great portrayers of American Western. His subjects were typically American Indians, calvarymen, cowboys, and roughriders. In addition to his American bronzes, Kauba produced a lifetime’s worth of Austrian statuary. His work became fully appreciated on both sides of the Atlantic. Carl studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under professor Laufenberg. Later he would study at the academies under Carl Waschmann and Stefan Schwartz. Next, he went to Paris in 1886 to further study before he set off for the U.S. In fact, some debate still remains as to whether Kauba ever visited the U.S. Kauba’s fascination with the West was fired by the stories of the German writer, Carl May, whose tales of Western adventure were well known throughout Europe. Most authorities feel that he was about twenty-five years old when he traveled widely throughout the American West. He then returned to Austria with voluminous notes, sketches, and several models of Western sculpture. He later corresponded with a friend in Ohio who sent him a complete collection of costume material. A few critics cite certain inaccuracies of weapons and equestrian gear. Without a doubt though, his work is most worthy of artistic merit. His bronzes were all, without question, produced in Austria. The polychrome finish, intricate detail, and the realistic forms make Kauba’s sculptures excellent examples of Viennese bronzes at the turn of the century. The difference being, that his subjects were of the American West. Most were cast for the American market between 1895 and 1912. An impressive larger than life-size cast and gilt bronze left hand and arm of a bodhisattva, late 19th century or earlier, Tibet. The over-sized arm and hand of graceful proportions. The arm tapering down to a slender wrist embellished with a simple bracelet hiding the join between the hand and arm. The hand and arm richly gilt. The join to the elbow visible and exposed. The hand heavily cast, with nice detail to the fingernails and cuticles. The palm with simple incised lines. The hand, with the pointer and pinky fingers raised, and the middle and ring finger folded down touching the thumb, performs the gesture known as karana mudra, the gesture of dispelling evil. (Here in Texas we refer to this gesture as "Hook'em Horns!") Karana mudra is often associated with Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, known in Tibet as Chenrezig, and in China as Guanyin. A most impressive fine quality large antique patinated bronze South Asian Buddha head. Add a touch of relaxed warmth, elegant tranquility and harmony with this rare striking authentic life-size Buddha head. Almost certainly originating as a full-body Buddhist monastery temple statue, dating to the 19th century or earlier, likely Tibetan or Nepalese, finely detailed throughout with special attention to realistic proportions, facial features and serene expression, depicted with slightly angular closed eyes, thin arched eyebrows flanking wisdom eye, elongated pierced ears, and traditional curly snail hair with cranial protuber-ance (ushnisha) rising from the top of the head, indicating his vast wisdom.
