Pair of Chinese Relief Carved Daybed Panels, c. 1850
About the Item
These carved wooden panels were once a part of the railing to a grand Qing-dynasty daybed or canopy bed enclosure. Expertly crafted, the panel displays a beautiful relief carving with intricate details of various robed figures gathered around a celebratory banner. Along the sides is a collection of porcelain vases, some planted and some on display. Flanking these figures are two mythical protectors - a fu lion dog, or shizi, symbolizing protection and power, and a celestial phoenix, the embodiment of prosperity and benevolence. Along the top of the panel are two carvings of potted sunflowers, as well as two small fu dogs with their tongues playfully hanging out.
From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
