About the Item

A rare and extraordinary offering, this remarkable pair of bronze statues of Bodhisattvas reflects the epitome of fine Chinese figure bronze making with superb skill and artistry. Each Bodhisattva is seated lalitasana with one foot supported on a lotus stem that projects from the holy beast they are riding upon. The hands in the shuni mudra, symbolizing patience and discipline. Wearing flowing shawls covering their shoulders and elegantly draped dhotis secured with sashes, with beaded necklaces and armlets completing their divine attire. The sensuous, full faces of the statues, with eyes casting a serene and meditative aura, are a testament to the artist's masterful skill. Evenly arched eyebrows frame their features, and each forehead is centered with an urna. Their hair is neatly arranged in high chignons, topped with magnificent tiaras and festooned bands that support a seated figure of the Amitabha Buddha. The holy beasts beneath the Bodhisattvas above auspicious clouds are symbolic and beautifully rendered: a beautifully adorned foo dog lion indicates the Goddess of Compassion, the most beloved Guan Yin. Holding a Ruyi scepter, indicating her power of answering prayers and granting wishes. The deity who rides the elephant is Pu Xian Buddha, the Goddess of Benevolence and Wisdom, who aids in the area of human relations and self development. The statues' historic significance is further underscored by the remnants of original gilt and mineral colors, such as lapis lazuli, which can still be observed, offering a glimpse into their past splendor. In remarkable condition and offered at a once-in-a-lifetime value, this set is museum quality and truly a rare and treasured find.
