About the Item

Outstanding antique Manila shawl made of black silk with embroidery in a wide variety of colors. As is usual in this type of piece, the base fabric is silk and the threads with which the ornaments are embroidered are also silk. The technique used is nuanced embroidery, with which it has been possible to represent floral motifs such as peonies. Before working on the piece, the drawing was made on paper and drilled; Then the perforated templates were marked with chalk, leaving the mark on the fabric that was passed to the frame to be embroidered. This magnificent piece is finished off around its perimeter with the creation of fringe, an element inherited from the Arabs, also made with silk thread and using the macramé technique. The composition starts from a small central peony, from which four large peonies are distributed symmetrically, in various shades of pink, all of them very saturated. Different flowers and plant elements, birds are distributed around it... The perfection of the finishes, the large size of the central flowers and its vivid color make this shawl one of the most valued. Origin and history The origin of Manila shawls dates back to China, around 600 AD, during the Tang dynasty; hypothesis supported by the fact that the Chinese were the discoverers of silk and the first to embroider with silk threads. The oldest example of this type of embroidery was found in a tomb from the Zhou dynasty (6th century BC). However, it was not until the 15th century when it took the name "Mantón de Manila", because it was precisely Manila, capital of the Philippines and former territory of the Spanish Empire, the origin of the maritime trade routes during the imperial era, where these works came from. Through the Eastern routes it reached Spain, Portugal and America, in high demand by women of high society. In this way, in the 18th century it had already established itself as one of the most popular women's accessories. In our country, it was in Andalusia where they achieved greater popularity. In the 20th century, the craft of embroidery became professional and the workshops for creating these pieces spread throughout Andalusia. Currently, they are a symbol of Andalusian culture and tradition, a sign of beauty and sensuality, and an element par excellence of flamenco and its visual spectacle. Although their use has never been lost, there is currently a “revival” of these pieces thanks to the figure of influencers, and they have made the leap to international catwalks converted into skirts, blouses, and even wedding dresses. .
