19th Century European Hercules Herm Architectural Carving
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
19th Century European Hercules Herm Architectural Carving
Hand-carved wood, 42" high × 4" wide × 3.5" deep
A finely carved wood architectural fragment in the form of a Herm of Hercules, dating to the 19th century and drawing upon Renaissance and Baroque precedents. The sculpture shows the muscular torso of a mature, bearded male figure with a deeply furrowed brow, curling hair, and a voluminous beard. His body is rendered in tapering herm form, with a draped cloth across the midsection leading into a long rectangular plinth decorated with foliate carving.
The herm derives from classical antiquity, where stone posts surmounted by the head or bust of Hermes (and later other gods or heroes) served as boundary markers and architectural supports. During the Renaissance and Neoclassical revivals, this form was adapted into decorative architecture, furniture, and garden ornaments, often featuring heroic or mythological figures such as Hercules to convey strength and guardianship.
The stern expression, powerful musculature, and prominent beard allude to Hercules, the archetype of heroic masculinity. Such carvings were often installed as newel posts, pilaster ornaments, or architectural appliqués...

16th Century Spanish or Italian Baroque Wrought Iron Nails and Furniture Mounts
Located in Stamford, CT
Group of 16th century (or earlier, possibly Gothic) Spanish or Italian wrought iron furniture mounts. These hand-wrought bosses and nails show incredible workmanship. These would have been used to decorate - and to structurally hold together an early chest or casket. The four geometric bosses beautifully made, eight ounces each without the nail! The nails are works of art in themselves, with their heavy geometric heads.
Also two round bosses with the nail integral to the piece, one a mushroom form, the other like a parasol. And a single hand-wrought double sided nail. Great group of early iron.
Provenance: Frances Pratt, Writer, Artist, Collector. New York City.
Approximate sizes:
4 bosses 4.625 inches square 11.75 cm
Round bosses 3 inches diameter the larger 2.5 the smaller 7.6/ 6.35 cm
4.5 in high 11.4 cm
5 nails...

18th Century Italian Walnut Wood Pulpit Canopy
Located in Dallas, TX
This large and attractive architectural piece is known as a pulpit canopy. Before the advent of microphones and speakers, orators would often address assemblies from elevated platforms known as “wine glass pulpits”. These podiums featured domed roofs called abat-voix, sometimes known as sounding boards, that would project sound outwards. Our walnut wood pulpit canopy is a fine example of such a device.
Hand-carved and hand-painted in Italy in the 1700’s, our abat-voix is roughly octagonal in shape. Each of the sides have edges with luxuriously thick step molding, alternating between stained and gilded wood. Each of the corner cornices are adorned with gilded flower carvings, although some are missing. The interior of the canopy features a gilded open sun with sinuous rays emanating all around. Each of the sides are adorned with foliate margents surrounded by scrolls, again with some losses. All the edges are bordered with a thin layer of gilding.
Although our fascinating 18th century Italian walnut pulpit canopy was designed for a church pulpit...
