Pair of 18th Century Polychrome Headboards from Italy

This versatile and unique pair of polychrome headboards were completely carved by hand in Italy during the 1700’s. Each headboard has a stylized fleur-de-lis crown which transitions seamlessly into scrolled shoulders that are embellished with sinuous motifs. The main body of the headboards are painted red with white circular and crimped motifs. The surrounds are in a deep variegated blue with soft gold borders.
Although beds made of a headboard with a matching footboard may seem like a modern furnishing, this type of arrangement had been in use in Italy since the 1500’s. They were usually intricately painted as were most other furnishings in Italian homes at the time.
At roughly 70 inches long, our pair of 18th century Italian headboards can fit up to a queen size bed. There are metal hooks on the backs for easy hanging. Of course these can also be presented as decorative architectural elements or even repurposed into a pair of cassapanca benches.
