About the Item

Wrought-iron fire screen by Ateliers Marolles, 1950. Beautifully crafted ironwork with farmyard animals, figures representing pigs, dogs, cows, roosters, donkeys etc. .... Metalwork by hand. The rear part exposed to flames is covered with a fine wire mesh for added safety. Jean Touret was a French sculptor and designer born in 1916, in Lassay-les-Châteaux, a small commune west of Paris, France, and died in 2004. Touret began his career working for an insurance company, but soon developed a passion for art. After work, he took evening drawing classes to perfect his skills. After the war, he returned to France, where he opened his studio Atelier de Marolles. Over the years, he designed and produced a number of pieces including tables, lamps and sideboards. Touret also worked in metal, designing screens in zinc and copper. He is also known for having designed Notre-Dame's monumental bronze altar, which was installed in 1981.
