Chinese barrel form brass bound stave constructed grain measure, c. 1915

About the Item

Chinese barrel form brass bound stave constructed grain measure with projecting pulley posts on the sides and a brass drop ring handle with circular brass back plate and bail stop in the front. The barrel is a standard grain measure for a "dou" – a traditional Chinese unit of measure. On one side of the barrel in a regular Chinese calligraphic script reads: "Chinese Republic 3rd Year (1915)." The four characters following the date translates to "Our own Eastern Tree Hall" - a name for a building. On the other side of the barrel are three characters, presumably the name of the calligrapher. China, circa 1915. Dimensions: 15-1/4" tall 10-3/4" mouth diameter 14-1/2" base diameter
