About the Item

A large vintage Burmese / Northern Thai lacquered bamboo rice basket lidded food storage container. Highly decorative, warm, rustic and attractive, this remarkable Southeast Asian rice basket has the wow factor for most impressive oversized shape, rough distressed texture, rich dark coloring and luminous patina sheen. Makes for a wonderful kitchen accessory, versatile storage box, monumental tea caddy bin, distinctive decorative object, creating a fascinating cultural interest, elegant warmth, and historical depth. It's a conversational piece, functional, and versatile, having a wonderfully whimsical charm, utilitarian folk art vibe, and overall outstanding antique character and authenticity. Hand-crafted in the Burma / Myanmar / Northern Thailand region of Southeast Asia, dating to the mid-20th century, hand-crafted quality, having a hand woven wicker covering to the voluptuous shapely vessel / rice box, featuring black hand painted exterior with warm burgundy red octagonal painted panels adorable with gilt accents to each side. Mounted over a square wooden base stand with decorative cutouts to each side. Dimensions: (approx) 18" High, 12" Wide, 12" Deep Condition: A wonderful example, the piece is in excellent shape overall, especially considering its age and use. Retaining some original antique character marks throughout, all age appropriate minor imperfections, including the wicker is slightly worn and loose in a couple of areas, no major cracks or scratches.

Exquisitely hand-crafted in Sweden in the early 20th century, the dished and molded palatial rectangular shaped tray features exceptionally executed period Art Nouveau hand-painted polychrome decoration, adorned with neoclassical motif of florals, foliage, acanthus leaves, and urn with flowers. Signed, marked Rorstrand with three crowns to verso, dated 1913, and lower right impressed HD Rorstrand CO 1/2.
