Native American ash basket with carved handle, 1880-1910

About the Item

19th century Native American hand woven square based ash basket with a hand carved clothes pin hinged loop handle. The upper rim of the basket is captured by a round double ash spline lashed with 1/4" ash splints capturing the vertical ash splines that go from rim to rim, along with the carved clothes pin hinge. The splines are woven with 1/4" ash to the midpoint of the basket where a 1" spline defines a halfway point. The 1/4" splines continue to the bottom which is defined by another 1" spline. Native American, Winnebago / Ho-Chunk, 1880-1910.
