20K leaf metal bowl with guinea feathers and jet crystals
This tripoint bowl offers a beautiful balance of lines. This bowl has a nice weight to it, it feels substantial in the hand. It's not every day you find a mix of feathers, leaf and crystals together in a sophisticated way. One of the things I like is mixing materials in an unexpected way.
To start....a primmer is applied to smooth out the interior surface then it is sanded, this process is repeated 2-3 times. Once that work is completed it's ready for the next Artisan who is a French gilder with 25 years of experience of doing outdoor sculptures or interior restorations for the most important buildings in NYC and along the East Coast. The leaf is Italian from Manetti of Florence. This color is called Caplain. The leaf is 20K it is made of 80%gold 4%silver 12%palladium 4%platinum, all noble metals.
After the bowl is leafed, it then transported covered in a wool/cotton batting for protection. At this step a top coat of gloss varnish is applied 2-3 times as needed. The feathers are natural Guinea which reads as a subtle classic interpretation of black and white. This combination beautifully blends in with many room colors. The feathers are harvested in the USA and are a byproduct of the meat industry.
The feathers are applied by a specialist in the accessory industry with 30 years experience.Then the crystals are applied by another seasoned specialist with 28 years of working with crystals.In total there are 3 artisans and myself who have worked on this. What a conversation piece!
