Antique Painted Primitive Covered & Finger Staved Sugar Pail, Bucket or Firkin

About the Item

This folk art finger staved covered sugar bucket or firkin shows no indication of a specific maker, or country of origin. We presume this covered bucket originated from Europe, possibly Dutch or English and dates to approximately 1900-1920. The bucket is tapered and composed of pine slats with two finger staved and copper or brass tacked rings. The top is also done with a finger staved ring with a pine top. The entire piece has been hand-painted with a deep blue chalk styled paint, with some illegible lettering and/or figures that were hand-painted in red and white. It is likely that this had some type of wire handle at some point, which is missing and there is considerable age wear to the outer surfaces as presented in the photos, and consistent with age and use. Still a highly decorative and functional covered rustic wooden covered bucket or firkin.
