Bob Stocksdale Signed Large Turned Wood Bowl, "Teak from Thailand"
About the Item
Large vintage signed Bob Stocksdale turned wood bowl "Teak from Thailand." This fabulous turned wood bowl was made by world renowned artist, Bob Stocksdale. Stocksdale is recognized internationally for the fine design and exquisite workmanship of his pieces, and is considered a highly influential and collectible 20th century artist due to his pioneering work with turned wood.
Born in Warren, Indiana in 1913, Stocksdale was a self-trained woodworker. As a teenager, he started making baseball bats and other items on the family farm with a lathe driven by an old Maytag washing machine motor and later went on to work with wood in a factory setting. Stocksdale declared himself a conscientious objector at the dawning of World War 2, and as a CO was placed in a camp with other conscientious objectors to work in forestry. During his time as a CO, he turned his first bowl and began training others to do the same while completing his alternative service.
Encouraged to pursue woodcraft by Columbus, Ohio gallery owner Helen Winnemore, after the war ended Stocksdale moved to Berkeley, California in 1946 and set up a home studio in his basement. During the course of his career, Stocksdale sought out a variety of rare and exotic woods to use in his craft, and continued to turn high quality bowls for upwards of 50 years. Bob Stocksdale passed away in California in 2003.
Stocksdale's pieces are highly prized by collectors, and examples of his works are held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York among others. The artist's prestigious honors include the American Association of Woodturners Lifetime Achievement Award (1998) and the Masters of the Medium Award, James Renwick Alliance (2003). Bob Stocksdale received the American Craft Council’s Gold Medal in 1995.
This elegant turned bowl is typical of Stocksdale's oeuvre, with a simple form that highlights the natural grain of the teakwood. As seen in the photos, the shape is reminiscent of a classic Revere Bowl, and has a small foot with walls which flare gently from the base and rise to a wide, slightly ovoid mouth. The bowl stands 4" tall and measures 5.25" in diameter at the foot. The piece measures 11" across the mouth at its widest point. The walls of the bowl are approximately .25" thick and the item weighs in at 1lb 5oz. As seen in photo 5, the foot bears Stocksdale's signature and is inscribed "Teak from Thailand" and " ~ Bob Stocksdale ~."
The bowl is in very good original vintage condition and has been left as I found it. It has not been oiled or otherwise altered in any way. It should be noted that while the piece does not have any splits, there is a thin line which is rough to the touch due to the composition of the teak itself, best seen on the right of the bowl in photo 3. The piece also appears to have some very small flecks of paint inside which I have not attempted to remove.
This gorgeous bowl displays beautifully and is sure to be an important part of an existing fine art collection, or would work equally well as a standalone decorative object. Simply stunning!
