About the Item

One of the most colorful and atmospheric pieces ever created by master sculptor and ceramicist Waylande Gregory, this glazed, shallow bowl shows a turbaned figure in the foreground, pouring from a ewer, surrounded by a line of white-robed figures. The scene is the great Bazaar in Agadir along the Atlantic coast in Morocco, usually referred to as the Souk El Had d'Agadir. Prodigious and indefatigable, Gregory produced a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic beginning in his college days, through his years working with Lorado Taft and later when he created large multi-figure pieces for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. He also produced a famous fountain group for the 1939-1940 World's Fair in New York.
