About the Item

A luminous and rare example of Venetian art glass, this opalescent bowl was created by Ercole Barovier for Barovier & Toso as part of the esteemed "a grosse costolature" (large ribs) series, produced in the 1940s. Characterised by its bold festooned rim and vertical ribs, the form is both sculptural and tactile—an embodiment of Barovier’s experimental elegance. Hand-blown in Murano glass, the bowl displays an iridescent, milky translucence that shifts subtly in changing light. Each of the raised “ribs” is defined by delicate linear tooling, showcasing the maestro’s masterful control over heat and gravity at the furnace. Though modest in scale—16 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height—the presence of this piece is pronounced, making it equally suited as a centrepiece or a collectible object for cabinet display. Well documented in period publications and included in several major museum collections, this is an important historic work from a pivotal moment in Barovier’s creative development. In very good vintage condition, with only light surface wear consistent with age and careful handling.
