It was wood-fired in an "Anagama" kiln in Upstate New York, a traditional Japanese kiln. These kilns are made of special bricks built on a slowly slanting hillside with several firing chambers. Wood must be added to the fire over several days and nights. Heat and smoke from the ash swirls through the kiln, landing almost randomly on the work.
