Stig Lindberg Mid-Century Gustavsberg Feather Pattern Bowl

About the Item

Stig Lindberg (Swedish, 1916-82) was one of the greatest Scandinavian designers of the Twentieth Century. He was prolific in ceramics designing everything from tableware ranges to unique stoneware pieces. He also designed in other mediums like glass and textiles. His whimsical, playful, freeform style is the epitome of the mid-century look and was a huge influence on others in the post-war years. He began his work at Gustavsberg in 1937 and stayed there until 1980 taking over as artistic director in 1949. He was the winner of a long list of prestigious prizes throughout his career and his work can be found in museums across the world including the National Museum, Stockholm and the New York Museums of Modern and Metropolitan Art. A stunning and unique Swedish Gustavsberg stoneware bowl decorated with feathered patterning by Stig Lindberg. The bowl stands on a narrow round unglazed foot with a slightly recessed unglazed base and has deep angled sides rising to a wide rim opening. This remarkable bowl has been decorated in beautiful turquoise blue glazes with brown/gold highlights around the rim extending into a feathered pattern to the inside of the bowl. The bowl has an incised Gustavsberg mark to the base along with an artist’s signature mark. Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. Excellent condition with light wear associated with age and use.
