Wood-Fired Hand Coiled Ceramic Bowl with Blue Glaze by Helena Starcevic

$700

About

Wood-fired, hand-coiled ceramic bowl with blue glaze. When a handmade clay pot is fired in a wood-fired kiln, the results are always an unpredictable surprise. This one surpasses all expectation. While the blue glaze melted and dripped 'just so', the ash formed it's own glaze to drip on the other side of the pot. Firing wads which keep the pot from sticking to the shelf are visible on the bottom. An excellent example of a wood-fired pot! Begun as a "pinch-pot" in the palm of the hand, coils are then added to help enlarge and define the shape. An irregular lip adds elegance, personality and uniqueness. The preliminary 'bisk' firing prepares the piece to handle the glaze and the extreme heat of the wood-fire kiln. It typically takes at least 4 days of stoking the kiln with wood, day and night to complete the firing. These kilns are not found in the City and one must travel to rural counties to participate in these twice yearly firings. Pieces from a wood fired kiln are guaranteed a unique effect since they are dependent on their location in the kiln, the way the flame, smoke and ash move through the kiln and land on each piece affects each one differently. Signed on the bottom with artist's signature Chop.

About the Maker

Helena Starcevic Ceramics

Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
