Extremely Rare Shippo Enameled Plate by Hella Jongerius, 2007

About the Item

Enameling was used in Europe in the Middle Ages, applied to jewelry, and again in the 20th century to create outdoor advertising signs. Due to the great expense in fabrication and the fragile nature of the material, enameling has become rare, and the technique now has been almost completely forgotten. In Japan, however, it has been carefully preserved – a fact that inspired Jongerius to visit the country and learn more about the artisans who still work in this medium. There, she created a series of enamel plates in collaboration with the traditional Japanese enamelware company Ando Shippo of Nagoya. The collection, called Enamel, was commissioned by the Tokyo design store Cibone, and it was exhibited as part of an exhibition called Serious Mellow in 2007. These extraordinary plates rarely become available.
