About the Item
Exceptional contemporary Japanese museum-quality porcelain charger/centrepiece, hand-painted in the artist's signature green and turquoise on a stunningly shaped raised square body, with a unique interpretation of elephants. It is a signed masterpiece by highly acclaimed award-winning contemporary Japanese master porcelain artist. The artist has drawn on various animals featured in Buddhist scriptures and religious practice to make his lifework the re-creation of a “Buddhist menagerie.”
This piece is inspired by the elephant that plays a central role in the Buddhist nativity story and the Flower Festival, the celebration of the birth of Buddha that is feted in Japan on April 8. As part of the celebration, elephants are shown carrying statues of Buddha into the world a reference to the dream of a white elephant that announced the conception of Buddha to his mother, Maya.
Depicted in this piece is a pair of Asian elephants, which are typically smaller than their African cousins. As in all of his pieces, the artist endows his animals with strangely intelligent and knowing eyes.
Having started his career in the venerable tradition of old Kutani porcelain, the artist faithfully draws on at least one of the prime Kutani colors of yellow, green, red, blue and purple in each of his work. The artist’s profile is available upon request.
