Japanese Contemporary Purple Pink Gray Porcelain Charger by Master Artist, 3

About the Item

Exceptional contemporary Japanese museum quality signed porcelain charger, stunningly hand painted in mesmerizing shades of the artist's signature purple, pink and gray on a beautiful rectangular shape body, with a unique interpretation of the rhinoceros. This highly celebrated award-winning master artist has drawn on various animals featured in Buddhist scriptures and religious practice to make his lifework the re-creation of a “Buddhist menagerie.” This piece is inspired by the Rhinoceros Sutra, a very early Buddhist text that extols the virtues of solitary and ascetic life as exemplified by the rhinoceros. Depicted in this piece are two single-horned Indian rhinoceroses with thickly folded skin that gives them the exaggerated armored appearance. The stubby legs and wart-like bumps that cover the bodies are also characteristic features of this species. In the artist’s rendition, the rhinoceroses look with humanlike eyes that convey an eerie sense of self-awareness. Having started his career in the venerable tradition of old Kutani porcelain, the artist faithfully draws on at least one of the prime Kutani colors of yellow, green, red, blue and purple in each of his work. The artist's profile is available upon request. This exquisite large hand painted porcelain charger comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: W 24 in D 10.5 in H 2 in. A few lines from the first part of the Rhinoceros Sutra (Khaggavisana Sutta) follow. Renouncing violence for all living beings, harming not even a one. Wander alone like a rhinoceros. In society, there are allurements, and on the heel of allurements, pain… Wander alone like a rhinoceros. Like a bamboo sprout be un-entangled. Wander alone like a rhinoceros. As a deer in the wilds, unfettered, forages wherever it wants, the wise person values freedom. Wander alone like a rhinoceros. (Adopted from translation from Pali by Thanissaro Bhikku).

A Massive Antique Japanese Arita Porcelain Plate by Kajiwara Kiln
Located in Atlanta, GA
On offer is a truly impressive blue and white porcelain plate of Hizen ware, from Arita in Japan, circa mid to late-19th century. The plate was made by Kajiwara Kikujiro (菊次郎, the second Kiku son) and/or Kajiwara Kikusaburo (菊三郎, the third Kiku son who died in 1883) of the Kajiware Family Kiln of in Arita. It was decorated in a superb design with blue under-glaze, clearly out of a hand of a master. In a Classic Japanese composition that was popular in the Meiji Period, the plate displays a riot of auspicious elements, arranged still in a surprisingly harmonious manner. Anchoring the center of the design is an eagle perched on the branch of a blooming cherry tree, its talons clenching the bark and its wings about to open. The motion of the its immediate taking off is palpable. The trunk and the branches of the old cherry tree provide a spacial frame for the arrangement of large peonies with foliage, bundles of chrysanthemums, Chinese bell...
